somehow instead of saying “as a treat”, I’ve started using the phrase “for morale”, as if my body is a ship and its crew, and I (the captain) have to keep us in high spirits, lest we suffer a mutiny in the coming days.

and so I will eat this small block of fancy cheese, for morale. I will take a break and drink some tea, for morale. I will pick up that weird bug, for morale.

I’m not sure if it helps, but it does entertain me

General rule of thumb for positive self-talk: If it entertains you, it helps!

This is Thelockpickinglaywer and what I have for you today is something very interesting. As you can tell by the agonizing screams of the damned, I have recently left the mortal coil and, upon arriving at my destination, was informed that I did not qualify for residence. I was taken by an angel of the Lord to the mouth of Hell, and when the angel left, he closed this rather large red door and sealed it with a divine key. Although I’ve never seen this particular model of lock before, I’ve spent some time investigating the cylinder with this small shard of bone. By sticking it in the back of the keyway and slowly pulling it out, I can tell that this is a five-pin tumbler lock, that can easily be single-pin picked using this shed demon scale as a tensioner tool. Let’s try that right now. Alright, nothing on one. Nothing on two. Three is binding firmly, click out of that. Nothing on four. Five is binding, little click there, back to one. Once again, nothing. Two is binding, and we’ve dropped into a false set. Little click out of three. Nothing on four. Little click on one, counter-rotation on two, and we got this open. Okay folks, I think the main takeaway here is that no matter how much faith you place in a mechanism designed to ensure your safety, be it spiritual or physical, there is always a state in which it can fail. In any case, thank you for watching. Memento mori, and I’ll see you next time.

Rewatching Truman Show for the first time in a long time, and the detail that’s stuck with me this time is the set design.

The characters drive modern cars and hock modern products, but it’s all presented with a veneer of 1950s wholesome applecheeked Americana. Truman’s life is presented as an escape for the audience from the drudgery of the modern day, and the aesthetic they’ve chosen for this is the post-war economic boom. This is the simple time, the movie says. This is the good time. Doesn’t the modern day suck? Let’s go back and see our friends from the days when life was good.

And it’s a lie. Truman’s life is a lie, and the image of white picket fenced suburbia they’ve presented is a lie. It’s an elaborate construction to recreate a false memory that’s comfortable for advertisers. The movie is a satire, but it’s also a very blatant statement against the nostalgia for a golden age which never existed. It’s a lie. It doesn’t exist.

I don’t know. I’m spitballing. I’m biased because I despise mid-20th century Americana and I naturally treat it with hostility, but it’s very gratifying to see a movie kind of agree with me.

Let me tell you a story.

Earlier in the summer, I went to Florida with my friend. We decided to visit a town nearish to where we were staying called Seaside, as we had heard it was a cute place. What I did not know at the time was that Seaside is the place where they filmed The Truman Show. It was a “master-planned community,” constructed in the 80s to be the perfect beach town.

Seahaven

And yes, it really does look Like That. Not just in their tourist-agency photos, in real life it looks like that. Arguably the irl Seaside is even prettier than movie Seahaven, because the the office buildings where Truman works don’t exist; the town is 100% cutesy homes and little shops.

even if you care deeply about some specific kind of suffering you do not have to fill your life with as many upsetting stories of that type of suffering as possible. that is just signing up to have a bad time.

does you absorbing this information help you benefit a cause? and even if you are benefitting a cause, are you doing something productive with more of these stories or are they just making you feel bad? are you taking more effective action or just getting overwhelmed with sadness? is surrounding yourself with stuff that upsets you helping you more than it hurts you?

i love that all the victims of the anglerfish are chain smokers. like, i know that’s the way it hunts, but why retain that AFTER they’ve been replaced?? wax, mannequins, dolls, masks, facepaint, that all makes sense, but what do CIGARETTES have to do with the Stranger?? does the anglerfish just really like nicotine??

i mean, addiction, and specifically cigarettes, is usually the domain of the WEB. is that implying that the anglerfish victims arent just being skinned and used as costumes, but controlled in like a hivemind kinda deal? or that the web has a lot more sway over Strangers than i thought, maybe it orchestrated the whole unknowing?

i suppose on a less in-universe level, it might just be thematically linking them to jon. just another person hollowed out and used to hurt the people they cared about.

the people seeing this who have never listened to the magnus archives, im so sorry but your confusion is so fucking funny imagine anglerfish as like a hoard attacking random chainsmokers oh my god

#tma#i do think it’s to cover up the Rotting Body smell but I really like the idea that the web has some sway over the stranger actually#that + the not!them being trapped in a web artifact + nikola being described as a puppet in breekon’s statement#(+ the one bag in breekon’s statement too but I don’t remember that specific part well so idk if it’s related or not)#idk maybe it’s a reach but I think it’s a fun concept :)#sorry for rambling lol (via @enteragoodnamehere)

ooh i forgot about the not!them being trapped in the table, that is interesting. maybe the web and the stranger had a stronger adversarial thing going on that i thought….
